You Won’t Believe the Shocking Christmas Gift Rule That Left Prince Harry Heartbroken!
The Royal Family have a strict rule when it comes to Christmas gifts, which has been known to leave some members of the family "disappointed" - including Prince Harry.
Royal author Craig Brown has spilled the beans on a little-known festive tradition that left Prince Harry feeling “disappointed” as a young Royal.
The family apparently sticks to a “ridiculously low” budget for Christmas gifts, around £5, which encourages them to get creative with “quirky or a little bit cheeky” presents.
In his book Voyage Around the Queen, Brown dishes out that typical gifts might include “an inflatable toilet seat” or “grow-your-own-girlfriend kits”, while pricier presents are a no-go in the Royal household. He reveals that during a tour of Sandringham, he learned that the older royals cherish these modest offerings, though the younger ones sometimes find the rule challenging, reports the Express.
Brown writes about the frugal gift-giving, noting: “Seemingly, they don’t want for much at all and unfortunately some of the newer members of the Royal Family have fallen foul of that rule.”
He adds insight into the thrifty limit, saying, “But just to give you an idea, the spend limit is ridiculously low, I don’t know what the current limit is but probably five pounds would be the absolute maximum, so you’ve got to think of something quirky or perhaps a little bit cheeky, or something you’ve made yourself a jar of chutney or a jar of jam. Those sorts of things are really appreciated.”
“To give you an idea of some of the jokey presents and I’m not sure I should be saying this! an inflatable toilet seat perhaps, or a grow-your-own-girlfriend kit. These are things we know have been given in the past and I’m not going to reveal who gave them or who received them! Or a whoopee cushion is another one! So, rather childish presents! But that’s what they enjoy receiving.”
In his tell-all book ‘Spare’, Prince Harry reminisces about a Christmas at Sandringham Estate where he was eager to open a gift from Princess Margaret. He recalls: “Standing before my pile, I chose to open the smallest present first.”
Harry describes his reaction as he unwrapped the gift: “I said: ‘Oh. A biro. Wow.'”.
Princess Margaret then made it clear: “She said: ‘Yes. A biro.'”.
However, it wasn’t just any ordinary pen, as Harry found out: “But it wasn’t just any biro, she pointed out. It had a tiny rubber fish wrapped around it.”
