Prince Harry has given a touching update about his parenting experience so far – and it may prove painful for his father, King Charles.
The Duke of Sussex will this weekend celebrate his milestone 40th birthday, an ocean away from the palaces where he grew up. Although many head into this decade with some trepidation, Harry says he is ‘excited’ as he looks towards the future, with fatherhood having brought him plenty of happiness.
The former working royal will spend his landmark birthday In California with his wife Meghan Markle and their two young children Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three. He is then reportedly planning to head off on a trip with close pals.
Notably, however, there will be two very important people missing from the celebrations – his brother Prince William, and their father King Charles. It can be assumed that both sides of the divided family will feel this absence as Harry looks back at his eventful life so far.
In a recent statement given to BBC News, Harry appeared in a cheerful mood as he looked ahead to blowing out those 40 candles, sharing: “I was anxious about 30, I’m excited about 40. […] Whatever the age, my mission is to continue showing up and doing good in the world.”
The Duke continued: “Becoming a father of two incredibly kind and funny kids has given me a fresh perspective on life, as well as sharpening my focus in all my work. Being a dad is one of life’s greatest joys and has only made me more driven and more committed to making this world a better place.”
Sadly, Harry’s own dad will likely feel a pang upon hearing this sweet update about the ‘kind and funny’ grandchildren he has spent precious little time with. Tensions appear to have been rife since Harry and Meghan made the decision to step back from their roles as senior working royals.
This rift, coupled with the distance between Buckingham Palace and the Sussexes’ Montecito mansion, means Charles has only spent time with Archie on a handful of occasions, and he’s only met little Lilibet once, during the Sussexes’ 2022 visit to the UK. Despite the ongoing friction, sources say the 75-year-old monarch is determined to build a relationship with his Californian grandchildren, with his recent cancer journey having prompted him to take stock of what’s important.
