Inside Meghan Markle’s last visit to the UK as she was forced back into Royal spotlight
The Duchess of Sussex hasn't been to her husband's home country in almost two years, however this could soon be set to change.
Meghan Markle could return to the UK this Christmas, marking what could be her first visit to her husband’s home country in over two years.
The Duchess of Sussex, who now lives in America with her husband Prince Harry and their two children Archie and Lilibet, hasn’t returned to the UK since the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.
At the time, the couple, who were already in the UK on an engagement, prolonged their stay to attend the funeral of Harry’s grandmother.
At the funeral, and the days prior, Harry and Meghan were invited along with other family members to pay respects to the late Queen, which included doing a public walkabout outside Windsor Castle together with Prince William and Princess Kate.
This was despite the public’s mixed reaction to the couple after their departure from the Royal Family in 2020 and their subsequent bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, where they criticised life in the Royal firm and made some damning allegations.
However, it was at the funeral itself where Meghan Markle was pushed into the royal spotlight once again despite the public hostility.
Throughout the proceedings, th e duchess was left with senior female members of the Royal Family as Harry walked behind his grandmother’s hearse.
Photographs from the event show Meghan looking solemn and distant from other members of the family, including Queen Camilla and Princess Kate.
Meghan also looked nervous as she stood at the centre of the large media event, which is likely to have caused discomfort for the duchess who said press intrusion was one of the reasons why the couple wanted to leave the Royal Firm, and the country, to begin with.
Last year, columnist Richard Johnson also said that the couple reportedly felt “mistreated” at the funeral.
