King Charles may ‘swipe treasures’ from Prince Andrew’s Royal Lodge as feud rages on
The dispute between King Charles and his younger brother Prince Andrew over the Duke of York’s home of Royal Lodge appears to be raging on.
In a fresh blow to Andrew, a royal expert has claimed that the King may “swipe treasures” from his home of 30 years, that belong to the Royal Collection Trust.
Speaking on the podcast Palace Confidential, royal biographer Richard Hardman claimed: “The Royal Collection, which owns quite a lot of the treasures inside there, may say, ‘Well we can’t be confident that this place is safe anymore,’ and they’ll start taking the paintings and the some of the furniture away”.
Prince Andrew signed a 75-year lease for Royal Lodge – a 30-room mansion located in Windsor Great Park – back in 2003, and it was previously occupied by the Queen Mother for decades. Currently, Andrew lives at the property with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, with whom he shares a close relationship. However, King Charles has been widely reported to be keen to move his younger brother out of the property, although Andrew is said to be adamant that he will not budge.
Andrew’s lease is with the Crown Estate, not Charles himself, but the monarch reportedly concerned about how Andrew will fund the upkeep of the Grade II listed property, particularly after reports that Charles has cut his younger brother’s former annual allowance of £1 million.
Charles reportedly wants Andrew to move into a smaller property that will be more manageable, given he is no longer a working royal. The Duke stepped down from duties in 2019 after a controversial interview with Newsnight over his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein – a sit-down which was widely seen as a car crash.
