After having a year marred by cancer and chemotherapy treatments, Kate Middleton is rightfully pacing herself when it comes to the amount of work that she takes on for the British royal family. While she is doing better in recent weeks since finishing chemo treatment, the Princess of Wales will continue to be extremely mindful of her energy levels and will keep her health in consideration when determining what she can—and can’t—take on.
“She is looking after herself and is wise to do so,” a source told People. “She will know when she wakes up if she is well enough or not [to do something].”
Middleton made a subtle return to royal duties towards the latter half of 2024, making surprise appearances alongside Prince William and attending royal events like the annual Trooping the Colour celebration or her Christmas Carol concert. The consistency, however, wasn’t there—and it’s very intentional.

Robert Hardman, author of The Making of a King: Charles III and the Modern Monarchy, told the outlet, “We are being encouraged not to look at this as a chapter that’s over and then it’s back to normal, because cancer doesn’t work like that.” He continued, “The details remain private but there’s no getting over the reality that it’s an unpredictable disease.”

Hardman’s quotes check out—Queen Elizabeth’s former press secretary, Ailsa Anderson, told People in December, “They can’t raise people’s expectations with lots of engagements only for her [Middleton] to face a setback, not feel well, and things are canceled…the strategy of an unexpected visit gives her flexibility. She doesn’t have the pressure of feeling she has to turn up.”

As such, the People report continued, the Princess of Wales “she has been allowed to get back in her own way,” a source told the outlet. “She has been able to pace it and do it her way, and that’s great.” Her family has been a large part of her recover, and they have “seen [Kate] through thick and thin.” Middleton and her loved ones also have “a sense of optimism going forward.”
