Female Dog Goes Into Heat, Metal Cage Can’t Contain Male Cane Corso

A video of an owner discovering what his male dog did while the female was in heat quickly went viral on TikTok.

Female dogs who have not been spayed go into heat about twice a year, starting when they are about 6 to 15 months old. During heat, females are receptive to mating and release mating hormones. Male dogs, on the other hand, can mate year-round once they become fertile at about 6 months, a Hill’s Pet article said.

Dog owner and breeder Marcos, who did not wish to share his last name, explained in his recent TikTok video posted to the account @canecorsoblackguardianz that male dogs tend to “lose their minds” when females are in heat. This is because female dogs in heat release a pheromone called methyl p-hydroxybenzoate.

Male dogs pick up on the scent, which can cause chaos, as Marcos learned that day. A male dog’s entire focus is tracking down that female. They might even stop eating, increase their marking or become aggressive.

Marcos told Newsweek that he placed his male Cane Corso, Sangre de Torro, in a crate while he went outside for a moment. His January 4 TikTok video shows what he discovered when he went inside. In about three minutes, the dog’s crate flipped upside down, the door mangled and the food bowl empty with kibble spread across the floor. It immediately dawned on him: His male dog had escaped to get to the female.

It shocked him because Sangre de Torro never tried to escape his kennel. Marco said it was “out of character” for his dog, but he does know males get “wild” when a female is in heat. He didn’t punish his dog, noting that it is nature.

The caption reads: “It’s a madhouse anytime there is a female in heat. My males lose their minds.”

Marcos said he keeps all of his dogs separate while the females are in heat. The one going through heat was outside and the rest stayed inside. But even after having them separated, Sangre de Torro managed to get to her.

He said the two were going to mate in a few days, which is why he wasn’t too upset. And now he’s preparing as their babies are set to arrive in March.

The TikTok video quickly gathered attention, bringing in nearly 2 million views as of Wednesday. People couldn’t believe the destruction that happened in a manner of minutes.

Another jokingly asked: “How are humans any different?”

Someone shared a similar experience: “Happened to my dog too 5 minutes in the bathroom they were both in their crates I heard her yelp & I knew it was too late. The kids were very cute & the crates were very broken.”

Others suggested Marcos to use a different dog crate, which he immediately agreed.

“I shouldn’t be using this crate during the mating season, but they won’t attempt to get out if not in mating season,” Marcos said.

What to Do While a Dog’s In Heat

While spaying and neutering can curb these unwanted behaviors, not everyone wants to have their dogs fixed. However, it is still important to keep your intact male dog away from an intact female while she’s in heat if you do not want them to breed.

The Hill’s Pet article suggested keeping your male dog distracted by providing plenty of exercise and activities. Be sure to have them separated. Place them in different rooms, ideally on opposite sides of the house. Play with each dog independently. You can also ask your veterinarian about using pheromone sprays to help during heat.
