Duchess Sophie ‘left in tears’ due to turbulent relationship with famous royal
Sophie, who is now the Duchess of Edinburgh, reportedly had a frosty relationship with one member of the Royal Family, who also married into the fold.
Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh’s rocky relationship with Princess Diana has been revealed through testimony from royal experts.
The Duchess, who is married to King Charles’s youngest brother Prince Edward, has been described as the royal family’s ‘secret weapon,’ – but she allegedly drew the ire of Diana throughout her royal life with the Duchess “left in tears at Diana’s comments and actions”.
Sophie entered the family when she was much older, seemingly handling the spotlight that comes with royal life far more easily than the late Princess of Wales. Her positive experience was vastly different to Diana’s, which was thought to have heightened difficulties between the two.
This was regularly of interest to the media at the time, with journalist Emma Cook claiming that Diana referred to Sophie as ‘little miss goody two shoes.’
Media treatment
It is thought the fractured relationship arose in part from the treatment each received from the family, along with the differing treatment each received by the media at the time.
Diana was said to be extremely vocal about her dislike for Sophie, often commenting on the “easy ride” she received when entering the family, as opposed to her experience which was likened to being “thrown to the wolves”.
Diana and Sophie were also regularly compared to one another in the media, alongside Sarah Ferguson, leading to many royal commentators believing competition developed between the two.
