And now her one-of-kind life that was characterised by her long 70-year reign has been charted in a new book, filled with fascinating stories.
Called a Voyage Around The Queen, author Craig Brown delves into the lives of the former monarch and her family revealing some startling revelations about them. Here we round up some of the best…
Harry and Meghan’s brutal nickname
Two of the late Queen’s most talked about royal relatives are her grandson Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle. And in the new book, there are claims about how they are referred to “indirectly” by those at the Palace. It comes as the author touches on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to leave their roles as working royals and move overseas to Los Angeles, US, to raise their children in 2020.
According to bold claims in the book, Harry and Meghan’s names “do not crop up very often in court circles” and they are instead referred to indirectly, since their bombshell departure. Brown quotes the Earl of Snowdon as he writes the Lord once observed: “The Royal Family is quite good at blanking out anything unpleasant or uncomfortable.”
He goes on to reference broadcaster Gyles Brandreth, who reportedly said in 2022: “These days, the names of Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, do not crop up very often in court circles… When they do, courtiers flinch almost imperceptibly and change the subject – or, if that’s not possible, refer to them obliquely as ‘persons who live overseas’.
“Mention the Sussexes to other members of the royal family… and they simply smile briefly and say, ‘We wish them all the best’ – and nothing else.”
‘Rude’ Trump claims
One of the most eye-raising claims in the book is about how the late Queen really felt about Donald Trump.
Elizabeth II hosted the former president, who is running for the White House again, twice in the latter part of her incredible 70-year reign. During this time, she earned global respect for her discretion and “soft diplomacy” – which meant it was never exactly known what she thought about anything or anyone.
But the book claims that the late Queen found the president “very rude” and “particularly disliked” the way he kept looking over her shoulder as if “in search of others more interesting”. The author also claims the former monarch believed Mr Trump “must have some sort of arrangement” with his wife Melania as she mused over their relationship.
